Twelve million bees escape after truck overturns in New Brunswick

EDMUNDSTON, N.B. — Twelve million honey bees escaped from a truck that overturned early today on the Trans-Canada Highway in northwest New Brunswick.

Police say the transport truck, carrying 330 crates of bees, was travelling on a ramp on the highway near St. Leonard when the load shifted and the truck overturned. RCMP Sgt. Derek Strong says the accident occurred shortly after 6 a.m.

He says rain is keeping the bees under control, but an emergency call has been made to the Department of Agriculture for assistance. Strong says emergency personnel, including paramedics and ambulances are on stand-by in case people are stung. He says no one has been injured.
